Smart Mining

Revisiting Artisinal and Small Scale Mining in Africa

Artisinal and Small Scale Mining (ASM) —a labor-intensive, low-tech form of mineral exploration and processing, is widespread in Africa but faces numerous dilemmas. Foremost of these dilemmas is the consequences linked to the widespread use of mercury in mineral processing, apart from other challenges associated with unsafe mining practices in the ASM sector. Mining and other exponential technologies have advanced tremendously; while the widespread adoption of Artificial Intelliegence holds promise for automating the ASM sector. In this episode, Dr. Tai Kindakital Goya explores how the discovery of gold in Bogusero, Kisii County Kenya continues to fuel the local economic growth, but has also exacerbated health, transportation and governance challenges. In this episode, Dr. Tai Kindakital Goya explores a local adaptation of the mercury gold processing processing, in order to identify bottlenecks that can be used as leverage points for transforming the process. In this episode, the guiding questions will be uploaded soon.
